Glen Ridge Mayor & Council Meeting Addresses Affordable Housing and Public Safety Issues

In an effort to address the community's concerns regarding affordable housing issues and public safety matters, the Glen Ridge Mayor and Council held their recent meeting. The agenda included discussions on affordable housing ordinances and resolutions for various events.

The meeting began with a pledge of allegiance followed by roll call where all councilors present were acknowledged except for Anthony Turiano who was absent due to an emergency situation. The mayor's motion to approve February 23rd minutes passed unanimously without any discussion or objections.

Next, the public safety and committee received six resolutions from Councilor Zimet covering various events such as the Arts and Ecoair festival on May 17th, Ashenfelter 8K race on November 26th, Memorial Day parade and picnic on May 25th, Rhino Rob at RAZ for Port of Ed on June 4th, Sunset Classic 8K in Bloomfield and Glenridge on June 25th, and the logger run scheduled for June 14th. All resolutions passed unanimously.

Councilor Meyer presented two resolutions related to affordable housing plans. Councilor Moody discussed new community initiatives such as an update from GRA (Glen Ridge Alliance) about their upcoming planning session. She highlighted that while the community faces challenges in affordability, they are also working towards solutions including expanded monthly permits and weather permitting, registration for summer camps and pools.

However, the discussion turned contentious when Councilor Lefkovits presented a motion to authorize payments for bills incurred during February 23rd's meeting without prior notice. This sparked outrage from some councilors who felt that homeowners were not adequately informed or consulted on the process of rezoning several properties under an affordable housing overlay zone.

Councilor Price, representing homeowners affected by this process, spoke out against what she perceived as lack of transparency in how the town conducted public hearings and notified residents about property changes. She cited inadequate notice periods and called for greater community involvement in decision-making processes related to affordable housing and rezoning.

The mayor emphasized that while there had been efforts to engage the public, some homeowners felt they were left out of critical discussions. The meeting concluded with a reminder from Councilor Moody of their commitment to engaging both residents and external bodies like the GRA in planning for future developments in Glen Ridge.
