Glen Ridge Council Mourns Slain Officer, Sets Hearing on Historic Preservation Rules
Listen
The Glen Ridge Mayor & Council opened with somber news, offering condolences following the shooting death of police officer Joseph Azanza (name as pronounced, spelling may differ), who was killed the past Friday in an incident that also left a colleague wounded.
Turning to local business, the Council announced that a public hearing on a new historic preservation ordinance will be held Tuesday, March 18th at 7:00 p.m. The proposed rules are meant to bring the borough into closer alignment with federal Interior Department standards and to make it easier and faster for the Historic Preservation Commission to review minor renovation requests. Separately, officials gave an update on the borough-wide water meter replacement project, reporting it is about 25% finished, with another quarter of homes expected to be completed over the coming weeks; that still leaves roughly half of all households needing to schedule their brief, 10-to-20-minute installation appointments. The Council also noted the Shade Tree Commission has an open seat after the death of longtime member Robert Bound, and residents who want to volunteer for the seat need to submit a citizen volunteer form by the 24th.
On routine business, the Council unanimously approved a resolution related to school taxes, unanimously reappointed Michael Zelli as Deputy Municipal Clerk as required under state law, and unanimously approved a raffle license for the Manto/Manetta/McKenna Angel Foundation, allowing the charity to hold a merchandise raffle on May 4th at the Country Club. During public comment, resident Gordon Levit of 131 Hillside Avenue thanked the town for its Scout snow-shoveling program, saying it has been a meaningful help since his wife is no longer able to assist him with snow and ice removal.
