School Policies Over the Years
340 of Glen Ridge's 638 board policies were all adopted on the very same day in 2002: a one-time, complete adoption of the NJSBA (New Jersey School Boards Association) model policy manual. That's the stable foundation. Below is a look at 152 more, adopted individually since — 2003 through 2023, across all 10 policy categories. The remaining 146 have no parseable adoption date and aren't shown here.
The baseline, and everything since
The left-hand column is the 2002 baseline: one bar per category, sized by how many of that category's policies were established in that single pass. To its right, one dot per policy the board has individually taken up since, positioned by the year it was adopted and colored by category. Hover any bar or dot for detail; click a dot to read the actual policy PDF (opens in a new tab).
What two decades of attention looks like
23 of the 152, grouped into four recurring themes and ordered by year — not a random sample, a narrative thread through two decades. Ordered by adoption year; spacing reflects the number of annotated policies, not elapsed time — the years in between saw plenty of other adoptions (see the chart above and the full table below).

Time between the law and the district's adoption
8 of the policies above cite a specific state law with a confirmed approval date (the "For reference" line on each card). This chart plots the elapsed time between that law's approval and the district's own adoption date. Every one of these 8 was adopted after the law it cites. Hover a bar for the two exact dates; click to read the source.

How this was put together: Each policy's own PDF states its history (e.g. “Adopted: 25 November 2002”). A regex pulled the original adoption year from that line for all 638 policies — 492 had one. 340 show 2002 (the NJSBA model-manual adoption); the other 152 range from 2003 to 2023.
Known limits and corrections:
- Each dot shows a policy's original adoption year, not its full revision history — 159 of the 2002 baseline policies were also technically revised later without changing that original year.
- The four attention themes are an editorial grouping for readability, not an official district taxonomy.
- Policies and Regulations aren't the same thing: a Policy is formally adopted by the Board (a vote, with an “Adopted:” date); a Regulation is issued administratively by the Superintendent to carry out a Policy or legal mandate, per the district's own bylaws (policy 0000.02). That's most of why 146 policies above have no parseable adoption date: 117 of them are Regulations, many of which were never given an “Adopted:” line at all.
This is a one-time look back, not a live feature — it won't update automatically as the district revises policies going forward. See the district's own policy manual for the current record.
