Commission denies clay tile roof replacement, splits on solar tile installation
Listen
The Glen Ridge Historic Preservation Commission's June 1, 2022 meeting included a unanimous denial and a dissenting vote on rooftop projects. Owners Iliana and Saul Martinez asked to replace their home's deteriorating clay tile roof with asphalt shingles, saying they could no longer patch it with salvaged tiles from their garage and could not afford a full clay tile replacement. Commissioners said clay tile and slate roofs are rare, significant features of the historic district and voted unanimously to deny the request.
Separately, at 172 Carteret Street, the commission approved a solar roof tile installation for owner Claire Allistone, but Joaquin Stearns voted no, citing concern that the panels could be visible from Ridgewood Avenue.
The commission approved several other projects, including a porch expansion at 10 Woodland Avenue; a large addition, garage conversion, and porch enclosure at 81 Sherman Avenue for owners Michael Vellucci and Teresa Boyle-Vellucci, on condition the plans drop proposed front-facing skylights and cut back the driveway; and a shed roof replacing an existing trellis at 47 Hillside Avenue, from which Dan McMahon, the project's contractor, recused himself. An addition at 22 Burnett Street was also approved, with Christine Yewaisis recusing herself from that vote.
Two applications did not reach a vote. Owners at 170 Ridgewood Avenue asked to continue their pergola, fireplace, and hot tub application to a future meeting after commissioners raised concerns about its size and materials. And at 212 Hillside Avenue, owners George Scott and Tracey Adusei's expanded rear and third-floor renovation drew extensive commissioner feedback on window glass, lighting, fencing, and roof massing; all agreed too many elements needed revision to approve it, and the applicants said they would return with changes.
What to watch
- Revised pergola, fireplace, and hot tub plans expected from the owners of 170 Ridgewood Avenue.
- A revised rear and third-floor renovation design expected from the owners of 212 Hillside Avenue.
