Historic commission honors Vice Chair Dan McMahon's 25 years of service at his final meeting
Listen
Vice Chair Dan McMahon attended his last meeting of the Glen Ridge Historic Preservation Commission on December 7, 2022, after 25 years on the board. Chair Geoffrey Darby thanked McMahon for his years of service and long-established knowledge of the historic district, and commissioners planned to gather informally to mark the occasion. Darby proposed Robert Deacon, an architect who lives in Glen Ridge but practices outside New Jersey, as McMahon's replacement.
On applications, the commission approved rear and side-roof solar panels at 53 Harvard Street, with a condition to separate the electric meter and inverter so they don't cluster on one elevation. It approved a second-story addition over a one-story sunroom at 36 Prescott Avenue, and a two-story rear addition with a new mud room and deck at 26 Hamilton Road; the latter drew extended discussion over a proposed cable-rail deck railing and an oversized entry overhang, which commissioners required be reduced to three feet.
A subcommittee report noted that owners at 80 Hawthorne Avenue had asked to install new front windows matching their home's existing vinyl windows, a request the subcommittee denied.
