Several applications passed only over real objections from individual commissioners. At 508 Belleville Avenue, an application from Brad and Eileen Leiber to demolish an unusable garage and remove a deck was approved despite a no vote from Vice Chair Githens. At 404 Ridgewood Avenue, modifications to an addition already under construction for Steve and Magda D'Addone were approved with a condition that a subcommittee review the shutters, but McMahon and Githens both voted no; commissioner Kopec had stepped down from that vote due to his earlier involvement reviewing the project. And at 224 Forest Avenue, a stoop replacement for Michael and Stephanie Koskuba was approved with Darby abstaining rather than voting yes or no.

A more sweeping rejection came at 163 Carteret Street, where Crissa Lodewick's proposed three-story rear-and-side addition was withdrawn after the commission said a motion "cannot be made" because the submitted drawings weren't to scale and didn't accurately show the existing house alongside what was proposed. The commission offered a subcommittee review of revised plans before the next meeting.

Two other applications were approved without dissent but with the project's own architect stepping down from the vote: a two-story addition at 24 Wildwood Terrace for John and Sarajayne Boyle, whose architect was commissioner Murphy, and a front-porch restoration at 40 Sherman Avenue for Brian Hart and Pascale Brunet, whose architect of record was commissioner Way.

The rest of the night's applications were approved unanimously: a handrail, brick landing, and bluestone sidewalk replacement for Tim Delp at 24 Edgewood Road; brick paver steps for Tom and Lisa Johnston at 35 Stanford Place; a smaller deck for Richard and Kathleen Hinchliffe at 49 Clinton Road; new windows and working shutters for Celeste and Chris Fabryk at 176 Midland Avenue; and a front-porch restoration for Julia Gorton and Daniel Kirk at 207 Baldwin Street.

What to watch

  • Whether 163 Carteret Street's owner returns with to-scale drawings after a subcommittee review ahead of the next meeting.
