Commissioners unanimously denied a request from Christa Bachman and Ilker Oklen of 354 Washington Street to replace their slate roof with asphalt shingles, continuing the commission's consistent stance against replacing slate with cheaper materials; the commission suggested the owners contact the National Slate Association about repair options instead.

Developer Joe Forgione presented a physical facade model for Glen Ridge ReDevelopers' planned 98-unit Baldwin Street building, following up on the commission's earlier request. Commissioners reviewed the model but took no vote, saying they still need to review and approve revised drawings before the project can move forward.

In more routine business, David and Elizabeth Chang won approval to replace their front wood steps with brick and bluestone and add painted wood railings at 251 Ridgewood Avenue (architect Mark Wright and commissioner McMahon both sat out that vote). The commission also voted to move its regular meeting start time from 8:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., effective with its September 2017 meeting.

What to watch

  • The commission's regular meeting time changes to 7:30 p.m. starting with the September 2017 meeting.
  • Glen Ridge ReDevelopers must submit revised, approved drawings for the Baldwin Street project before a vote can be taken.
