Glen Ridge Council Approves $209K in Claims, Adopts Stormwater Rules, and Plans Tree Planting
Listen
The Glen Ridge Mayor and Council approved over $209,000 in various claims, including $134,631 for general expenses, $61,688 for capital projects, and smaller amounts for trust funds and payroll services. The council also adopted a new stormwater management ordinance after a public hearing with no comments, tightening regulations to better handle runoff and flooding.
Two ordinances were introduced but not yet passed: one to adjust the municipal budget cap, allowing for potential spending beyond current limits, and another to amend parking restrictions in certain areas. The Shade Tree Commission proposed a $25,000 plan to plant 70 trees along Ridgewood Avenue’s northern stretch, with possible county funding assistance.
The town is also preparing for a transition to dual-stream recycling due to a fire at its single-stream processing facility, though cost savings are still being evaluated. Meanwhile, bidding deadlines for two infrastructure projects—the gun range ventilation system and fuel pump replacement near the police station—were extended to March 10 due to technical questions and lack of initial bids. Bidding for the 2019/2020 Roads Program will begin February 25.
The council acknowledged the passing of David Genota, a planner who worked on several borough projects. Resident Maureen Mica raised concerns about police department litigation and sick leave policies. The DPW reported using 260 tons of salt and 10,000 lbs. of calcium chloride for February’s snow removal, while students helped clear snow for residents in need. The Shade Tree Commission noted that 84 trees were removed in 2020, mostly due to age and storm damage.
